Turner School District Files to Dismiss Strip-Search Lawsuit
News

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — A mother speaks out after filing a lawsuit saying her daughter was wrongfully strip searched. This is an update to a story FOX 4 first brought you in May.

Amanda Sandidge, the girl’s mother tells Fox 4 School Officials forced her daughter to lift her shirt and bra up, exposing herself in December after another student  falsely accused her daughter of having drugs at high school. The Superintendent of Schools tells us they asked the girl to pull her bra forward with her shirt untucked.

Sandidge says her now 16-year-old daughter was threatened and coerced to prove her innocence by exposing herself to the school Nurse and a Vice Principal.

“If she did not submit to exposing herself to them that they would take her out of school in handcuffs and because it was a Friday that she would not see a judge until Monday to be released,” she says.

Sandidge says because of the experience, her daughter hasn’t returned to school and will only leave the house for counseling.

“Shes an emotional train wreck.  She really is.  She feels like shes been violated.  She doesn’t trust people.  Shes embarrassed.  Shes humiliated,” says Sandidge.

In a statement to FOX 4, the Superintendent of Schools says the District has a policy prohibiting strip-searches by school officials and says that at no time was the girl asked to, nor did she removed any clothing other than her shoes.

“I want the school to admit that they were wrong,” Sandidge says.

The district has filed a motion in Federal court to dismiss the suit.   Sandidge says she’s not giving up and is asking for more than $75,000 in damages.

“I’m not backing down and neither is he.  I am not going anywhere. This is my kid,” she says.

A lawyer for Sandidge and her daughter says he does not expect the Judge to rule for a few months on whether to dismiss the suit or not.
